Do you know the plant in the picture? There is a great chance that you have already consumed it today, perhaps even several times. Yesterday, too
It’s coffee.
According to The Coffee Book: Anatomy of an Industry from Crop to the Last Drop, coffee was first consumed by the members of the Galla tribe in present-day Ethiopia between the 6th and 9th centuries. However, they did not drink coffee, but rather ate it. After crushing it, they would dissolve it in animal fat in order to have it ready for consumption in situations that required extra efforts, such as long trips or wars. It was not until several centuries later that coffee became a drink.
Today, a billion and a half cups of coffee are consumed every day.
